Movement Disorder Society of the Philippines
In 1999, there was a felt need for an organization to address movement disorders in the Philippines. This concept was specifically enhanced in view of the indigenous presence of X-linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (XDP) in the Panay region of the country. The council of elders – past presidents of the Philippine Neurological Association (PNA), were convened and those who were interested were invited to become members of the organization.
In 1999, a set of officers, with Dr. Mayvelyn D. Gose as President, were elected in the newly organized Movement Disorder Society of the Philippines (MDSP). A simple ceremony was held at the Pan Pacific Hotel that same year to swear-in the new officers and board of directors of MDSP, with the inducting officer being then, the incumbent PNA President, Dr. Ramon S. Javier. Through an agreement between the MDSP President and Ms. Rosemarie Ong, then Corporate Relations Manager of Servier Philippines, Inc, an allocated first revolvingfund of the association was provided for, as a grant for educational campaign. The Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines eventually approved the MDSP as a non-profit organization, the following year. It was in 2005 that the MDSP became officially recognized as an affiliate organization of the PNA, through a memorandum of agreement struck with then PNA President, Dr Romeo Enriquez.
Actually, from years 2001 to 2007, there was a lull in the MDSP activities partly due to an illness in the immediate family of the incumbent President Dr. Mayvelyn D. Gose, and in 2007, she herself, became unfortunately stricken by an illness, that led to her having to pass the presidency to then Vice President, Dr. Raymond L. Rosales. Since then, the latter tried to revive the organization, while pursuing the goals initially set by his predecessor.
The MDSP started by initiating a lecture series on common movement disorders encountered in neurology in the different medical schools with no neurology programs:
Oct. 15, 2007 – Fatima College of Medicine
Oct. 11, 2007 – FEU College of Medicine
Oct. 29, 2008 – Chong Hua Medical Center, with Cebu Neuroscience Group of PNA
In 2009, an educational activity was launched in cooperation with PNA and the Movement Disorders Council of the Philippines. This was the first national MDSP Scientific Activity entitled ‘Movement Disorder in Focus’ and supported by the international movement disorders society (MDS)-Asian Oceanian Section (MDS-AOS), held at the Waterfront Hotel, Cebu City on Nov. 18-19, 2009. This close collaboration with the activities of the MDS-AOS, eventually led the MDSP to become an officially recognised affiliate society of MDS, during the same Cebu occasion. No less than the then MDS President, Dr. Philip Thompson, did the honors of inducting and affirming the set of officers, advisers and directors of MDSP
Indeed, one of the main reasons for establishing the MDSP was to help the research investigations of patients with XDP, through the strategic collaboration with the XDP Study Group led by Dr. Lillian V. Lee. Dr Lee also became the local adviser of MDSP, together with Dr. Hubert Fernandez, as international adviser.
In 2010, quarterly video sessions by movement specialists of different centers were undertaken with the support of Boehringer Ingelheim. Since then, collaborative efforts have been developed with known centers in Japan, USA and Germany, in order to enhance genetic, diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical studies aimed at improving the quality of lives of the XDP patients. In 2011 Dr. Lillian V. Lee was appointed chairman of the movement council of the PNA and was tasked to develop clinical guidelines for common movement disorders. In order to enhance the awareness on pediatric movement disorders, Dr. Lee initiated dedicated educational sessions at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center. In 2012, MDSP has also launched its website through educational grants from GSK.
Thus far, the MDSP has come a long way and in 2012, the first MDSP, standalone national convention was held in Aug. 25-26 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza. This activity saw the active participation of experts in the Asian and Oceanian region, including the opening ceremonies done with the MDS-AOS Chair Robin Wu. In fact, the MDSP has continuously lent collaborative efforts with the MDS-AOS through membership of its officers (Drs Lillian Lee, Raymond Rosales and recently Dominic Jamora) in the Educational and Executive committees.
MESSAGES
Messages from the MDSP

We, the members of the Movement Society of the Philippines (MDSP), are proud to announce the celebration of our Silver Anniversary on the 19th to 21st of October this year, 2024.
Our society albeit small and relatively young, has been at the helm of good research practices in neurology and especially in the field of movement disorders. Looking back at the 25 years of MDSP, we wish to celebrate wins both big and small as we continue to forge our way into the future of movement disorders in the country and in the global scene. We celebrate our efforts in striving to win for our patients with X-linked dystonia parkinsonism (XDP) as we continue to study the biology of this disease and find ways to help our ailing patients. We celebrate the growing awareness of the Filipino to Parkinson’s Disease and now available treatment options, such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) especially for advanced cases. We celebrate and honor the international partnerships we have formed through the years in furthering both research and specialty education. Many of our specialists have been products of these international fellowship programs. Finally, we celebrate our growing movement disorders community in the Philippines. We are a fast growing family composed not only of movement disorder specialists, other physicians, numerous allied healthcare professionals, but most importantly and at the heart of MDSP, our patients themselves who have formed and initiated support groups to further awareness of the different movement disorders.
Cheers to 25 years of MDSP! Mabuhay ang Pilipino! To our international guests and colleagues, we are excited to welcome you to Manila.
Sincerely yours,
Juan Miguel P. Bautista, MD, FPNA

Overall Chairman, MDSP Silver Congress

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Toward our Silver Anniversary, it is with pride and gratitude the journey has taken us together since MDSP was born in 1999. We have grown and evolved over the past 25 years, becoming a beacon of hope and support for those affected by movement disorders across the Philippines.
Hinged with the vision of advancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and improving the lives of individuals living with movement disorders, MDSP has continually strived to uphold these principles. Through our dedication to education, advocacy, and research, we have made significant strides in raising awareness about movement disorders and enhancing the quality of care provided to patients nationwide.
A pivotal moment in our history was the official affiliation with the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (IPMDS) in 2009. This partnership has not only strengthened our global network but has also allowed us to access invaluable resources and expertise, empowering us to better serve our community.
Commemorating our 25th anniversary, I am thrilled to announce the upcoming International Congress scheduled for October 17-19, 2024. This milestone event presents an unparalleled opportunity for us to come together as a community, exchange knowledge, and celebrate our achievements. With a diverse line-up of speakers from here and abroad, engaging workshops, and interactive sessions, the Congress promises to be a transformative experience for all attendees.
I therefore urge you to mark your calendars and actively participate in this momentous occasion. Your presence and contributions are integral to the success of the Congress and the continued advancement of our field. Let us seize this opportunity to learn from one another, forge new collaborations, and reaffirm our commitment to improving the lives of individuals affected by movement disorders.
Moving to the next chapter of our journey, let us carry forward the spirit of camaraderie and determination that has defined MDSP since its inception. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful impact and shape a brighter future for those living with movement disorders in the Philippines and beyond.
Your unwavering support and dedication to our shared mission are sincerely appreciated. Cheers to 25 years of progress, and to many more ahead!

Dear Esteemed Colleagues and Friends,
It is with great pleasure and excitement that I extend a warm welcome to each of you attending the 25th Silver Anniversary Congress of the Movement Disorder Society of the Philippines (MDSP). I am sorry that I cannot join you in person on this occasion in the Philippines, as I had already accepted an earlier invitation to lecture at another MDS-endorsed event in the AOS.
This momentous event marks a quarter-century of dedication, collaboration, and groundbreaking advancements in the field of movement disorders – not only highlighting the past achievements of the MDSP to date, but also paving the way for future innovations and partnerships.
As Chair of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society – Asian and Oceanian Section (MDS-AOS), it is inspiring to see the strides MDSP has made in advancing the understanding of movement disorders and improving patient care in Asia. MDS welcomed MDSP as an Affiliate Society Member in 2009 and we look forward to a continued, fruitful partnership with the Society.
I encourage each of you to take full advantage of this occasion to connect with colleagues, exchange ideas, and explore new avenues for research and clinical practice. Your contributions and perspectives are invaluable as together we continue to advance our field and improve the lives of those affected by movement disorders. It is also a wonderful opportunity to make new, and renew existing, friendships.
